Booneville Garden Club August 2022

The Booneville Garden Club met Wednesday, August 17th, at the Community Building. President Anne Cooney called our meeting to order at 1 o’clock with a good attendance.

Jerry Miller got us started with a good devotional- always positive and up-lifting.  Secretary/Treasurer Darlene Wolski Miller read the minutes from our previous meeting and gave the Treasurer’s report.  In old business, Co-Vice President, Sue Hughes reported on the nominating committee’s meeting last month. Officers for the upcoming year will remain the same, except for the office of president. Anne Cooney will get a much needed break. Pat Jackson will be our new president, bringing her enthusiasm to our endeavors.

The biggest new business topic was scheduling a work day at the Chamber of Commerce grounds on Saturday, August 20th. Workers are always needed to help maintain the front area of the Chamber location. Ron Cooney does a great job of trimming the hedges around the Chamber building, making for a tidy cleanup.  It’s a big job but many hands make light work- as the old proverb says.

We also discussed the need for a bake sale/plant sale to replenish the treasury for continued scholarships for a graduating high school student. We received a hand-out of an article by author/gardening educator Janet Carson, that included a recipe for homemade Miracle Grow and a great pesticide for white flies, spider mites, aphids and fungus gnats.

It’s time to plant your fall garden, annual flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetable and flower seeds. Be sure to read the packet for a completion date if subject to freezing.

Our program was presented by Pat Jackson who enlightened us on herbs and the healing plants Aloe Vera, Passion Flower, Dandelion, Lemon Balm, Blackberry and Raspberry. So good to know relief is available through natural sources instead of drugs when you are ailing with headaches, burns, diarrhea, anxiety, stress, high blood pressure, colds or flu. Pat was our hostess this month and furnished some delicious refreshments: iced tea and an absolutely wonderful blueberry dump cake. Best I’ve ever had!

Meeting was adjourned at 2:30 and we are already looking forward to our September gathering.  For more information on the BCG please call Sue at 214-762-8680. You just might like to join us.
