South Logan County Fair Recap 2021

South Logan County Fair Recap

by Rachel Ewing

The South Logan County Fair kicked off Tuesday, September 7th with the checking in of Home Economic entrees and the Kid’s Show De O sponsored by First Western Bank.

Over 18 local 4Hers and FFA students competed in various activities of the Show De O from a peddle tractor race to frozen T-Shirt challenges for cash prizes.

Wednesday Home Economics was judged and all animals were checked in.

Poultry was judged on Thursday morning followed by the Rabbit Show in the afternoon and a Chuck Wagon Dinner sponsored by First Western Bank in the evening.

Swine, dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats, and llamas were shown beginning Friday at 8 AM. The Fair Board was privileged to have Mr. Jarrad Fast as their judge for the livestock show. We appreciate Mr. Fast taking time out of his busy schedule to judge the animals at this year’s fair.

Saturday was kicked off by the Horse Show that began at 9 AM and hosted several 4Hers and adults. There was also a dog show in the afternoon Mr. Bill Garner and the River Valley Antique Tractor club displayed their tractors for fairgoers to see for several days with a tractor pull show on Saturday.

That 4H Pullet auction was held at 1 pm. If you are not familiar with the Pullet Auction it is a great opportunity to support your local 4H program and purchase your very own chicken. Poultry Chain is a program that allows 4Hers to raise a batch of chicks, usually 15 to 20. They get the chicks in the spring and raise them all summer. They are required to enter 3 in the fair to be shown and then auctioned off. The money raised from the pullet auction is used to buy the next year's chicks. The remaining chickens are the 4Hers to keep. Contact Sarah Enoch for more information.

The Junior Premium Auction was held at 6 pm immediately after the awards presentation and Auction meal. The Premium Auction meal was served to thank our premium donors and honor our exhibitors.

Twenty-four FFA students and 4Hers earned their way to participate in the Junior Premium Auction. The Premium Auction is an opportunity to donate to our exhibitors. A big thank you to all our premium buyers and add-on contributors. Livestock was checked out Friday and Saturday evening after the show and Premium Auctions respectively.

Sunday concluded the fair with home economics being checked out and a short cleanup day.

The concession stand was open during the fair and served burgers, hotdogs, nachos, funnel cakes, candy, chips, and drinks. They also served breakfast Friday and Saturday

mornings. All proceeds from the concession stand go to the Fair Board and the Booneville Extension Homemakers club.

The Fair Board is very proud of each and every 4H and FFA student that participated. These young people are some of the hardest working and dedicated around.

There were over 300 exhibitors and over 1300 entrees at this year’s fair.

We would also like to thank all the parents, grandparents, 4H leaders, FFA sponsors/Agriculture teachers, volunteers, and attendees for all your support to the fair and our exhibitors.
